Chapter 13

I pulled Daphne aside. “Algerone is going to the pub with his friend directly after the game,” I said. “We need to leave the game a little early. I’ll take you all home, and then I’ll go back to his house and search it.”

“Not a break and enter!” Daphne clamped both her hands over her eyes.

I hurried to reassure her. “No, nothing like that. I’ll just skirt around the outside of the building and look in the windows. I’ll call out for Caspian, that is, unless Algerone has close neighbours.”

“It sounds too dangerous to me,” Daphne said. “What if he comes home early?”

“He’s made definite arrangements to go to the pub and then home with his friend,” I said. “Even if I only search his place for half an hour, that will give me plenty of time if he changes his mind and goes home. And that’s highly unlikely.”

“Then I should come with you,” Daphne said. “Edison and Delilah can mind Harriet.”

I had been hoping she would volunteer. “Thanks, that would be wonderful,” I said with enthusiasm.

The game started, and soon the crowd was vocal. Algerone returned, minus the furtive man, and sat next to his friend in the front row.

I looked around for the furtive man but didn’t see him anywhere. I continued to watch Algerone, but he didn’t do anything out of the ordinary. He didn’t do anything suspicious at all.

At quarter time, I walked around the aisles of the VIP seating section, looking for the man. There was no sign of him anywhere. I walked inside to the bar areas and searched. Again, there was no sign.

It wasn’t a terribly big place, so I should have seen him. He must have had a ticket because people weren’t allowed in without tickets. Did he pay seventy-five dollars just for a brief meeting with Algerone? There could be no other explanation. The question was, why?

I searched on my phone for Algerone’s address but came up blank. I texted Edison and told him about our plan and asked if he happened to know where Algerone lived.

Edison got back to me fifteen minutes later and, to my relief, supplied Algerone’s address.

The second quarter had started, so I searched for the address on the maps app on my phone. It didn’t take long to locate the house in a somewhat remote area across from paddocks and on the edge of town. That would certainly be a good place to hide a kidnapping victim.

My excitement grew. Would I be able to find Caspian that very night? It seemed too much to hope for.

Yet, if Algerone had kidnapped Caspian, would he stay overnight at Southport with a friend? At first, I thought not, but then considered that he would need to go about his usual routine so as not to throw any suspicion onto himself.

At half-time, Harriet was complaining that she was bored. “But I thought you wanted to come here to spy on Algerone,” I said.

“We’ve been spying on him all this time, and he hasn’t done anything,” she countered.
